This book first published in the millennium year 2000,documents how a pulp based rayon industry dependent on the forests resources of the Western Ghats region in Kerala, India influenced the damage to the forests and wildlife. The story attempts to quantify the damage caused by way of extraction of bamboo in massive quantities to produce Staple Fibre Rayon clothing by the Gwalior Rayons Factory that was set up soon after independence in the river side village of Mavoor in Kozhikode District of the State of Kerala. This book helped clear misconceptions that industrialisation is a panacea, and that forest resources are for exploitation. The book influenced policy makers to rethink about the industry and its continuance in the State. In 2001, the industry was shut down permanently following massive struggles against its pollution and resource depletion. The book is now material for study of the economics that has to be foregone for sustaining such industries in the name of development. The print edition of the book is unavailable.
